The FLINTA* Bookshelf Collective Community Statement
We are an English-speaking FLINTA* collective in Berlin, passionate about intersectional feminism, literature, and community building.
The FLINTA* Bookshelf Collective is composed of several working groups that primarily organise community events and projects, alongside hosting an intersectional feminist book club.
Our goal is a collective liberation from patriarchy, capitalism, racism and other systemic oppressions through organizing and community building.
FLINTA* stands for female/women, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, agender, and other non-cis male identities.
Book club
Our book club focuses on intersectional feminism, politics, gender, and queerness. We strive to create a safe(r) space where everyone is treated with kindness and respect and feels welcome to speak and speak up. We believe in open, honest conversation.
The book club meets once a month in person in Berlin. Any member can suggest a book, and our next read is chosen by voting.
Please note that not all members of the book club are part of the collective.
Structure and organisation of the collective
Our collective is structured into four working groups.
Awareness & accountability
Events, programming & materials
Membership, fees, finances & fundraising
Social media & communication
We make decisions collectively, often by consensus or democratic voting, with an emphasis on transparency and care. We aim to meet bi-monthly as a collective to discuss our plans and goals for the upcoming season.
If harm occurs within our spaces, we are committed to addressing it through a caring, accountable process rooted in collective learning.
Community building
Our event-organizing working groups focus on community building, creating space for FLINTA* people, raising awareness about feminist literature, and claiming public space in Berlin to foster community.
We plan on collaborating with other initiatives, groups and communities in Berlin.
Not all collective members are involved in the book club.
Our values
We explicitly reject all forms of discrimination, including but not limited to racism, classism, ableism, sexism, xenophobia, queer-phobia, and transphobia.
We encourage passionate and politically engaged discussions—as long as they remain respectful. We value honesty and accountability, and we welcome being called out, as long as it is done with care and constructiveness.
We aim to create a space that is attentive to the needs of all members, including those with physical disabilities or who are neurodivergent. If you have specific needs, questions, or concerns about accessibility at any of our events, please feel free to reach out to us via flintabcb@gmail.com. We will do our best to accommodate your needs as a collective.
Events organized by our collective are published on our website and Instagram page. Our events are open to everyone who is respectful of the space and its participants and who shares our values.
We aim to create accessible and safe(r) spaces for marginalized groups, and we’re building a welcoming, book-loving community through meetings, conversations, and sharing literature.
We welcome and encourage feedback, ideas, and constructive criticism about how the collective is run.
We are mindful that the majority of the collective currently consists of white and cisgender people. As a queer and anti-racist collective, we are actively working to create safer, more inclusive spaces for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) and TIN (trans, intersex, and non-binary) people. We especially encourage BIPOC and TIN folks to join and shape our events.
Membership
The book club is currently at full capacity and not accepting new members.
The collective is open for new members.
Members of the collective pay a monthly fee on a sliding scale (1–5 euros). This helps us fund community events as well as internal gatherings for the collective.
